The question of what is good and what is evil has been in contention since the Garden of Eden. It was a central issue in the discussion between Eve and the serpent. The serpent leads her from his first question to his main trap.
(Genesis 3:5) for God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
That’s all it took. Eve took the fruit and ate it. She separated her spirit from God’s Spirit. There was no going back. Satan had not tempted her. He had enticed her, seduced her, tricked her. James 1:14 says that we are tempted when we are carried away by our own desires. Eve had a problem in her heart before she approached the tree. She did not trust God. She wanted to do things her way. Adam followed in her steps a short time later.
Satan had used a mixture of truth and lies when he talked to Eve. The first lie was she would never die. The second, she would be like God and know the difference between Good and Evil. The truth was used in describing God to her. He used the phrase, “You will be like God, knowing Good and Evil.” This gives the answer to the question. Only God knows the difference between Good and Evil; we do not. Do not give satan any semblance of power over us. He is a defeated enemy. Stay close to Christ.
Once the first couple separated their spirit from God’s Spirit they had no idea the difference between Good and Evil. They were on their own then, as we are now. Everyone goes their separate way. People do what they feel like doing. It’s not evil, they say, and so they do it. Might make right. The more powerful people have the less powerful people at their mercy, and these people are either crushed or killed. Everything goes topsy-turvy. God condemns this unjust behavior.
(Isaiah 5:20) Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Only God knows what is good and what is evil. He created us. Everyone judges God for being evil when he allows people to suffer and die. We don’t know what we are saying. We don’t know the difference between good and evil. We have no idea what God’s long-term plans may be. We are not able to judge God’s actions. We have no basis for our judgment.
We judge God based on our own idea of what is good and evil. When anyone judges God to be evil, they are moving away from God, away from the light and towards darkness. The only way we can tell good from evil is for God to show us. He can only do this when we are in Christ, and Christ is in the Father. We must be connected to Jesus, and our spirit must be joined to His Spirit.
Like everything else God teaches, it is not an instant lesson. It takes time. It is part of the sanctification experience. He teaches us more and more as our union with Him becomes stronger.
